Hello lovely people, I hope you’re doing marvellously well!
I recently had the pleasure of working with the talented Ashleigh Watson! Ashleigh is an independent retro soul singer/songwriter based in Melbourne Australia.
Originally from a jazz background, she found her passion for Motown and Soul music when she joined world-renowned girl band ‘Sweethearts’ at just 14 years of age. She performed with them twice at the prestigious Porretta Soul Festival Italy and Montreaux Jazz Festival Switzerland.
Over the past few years she has also become a recurring session vocalist on The Voice Australia and X-Factor.
In the mix breakdown of her song “Little Love,” I go through each track and give an inside look at the arrangement, mix, and instrumentation. This one is going to be very in-depth. Are you ready? Here we go!
Download the multitracks and mix this song for yourself:
Hope you paid Hal Blaine and Phil Specter for the “Be My Baby” drum riff! LOL
Haha I just played it using samples @disqus_rxgas9HRJR:disqus! Pretty simple but highly effective groove! Just goes to show that simple works great! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
haha dang these horns are live? Tight af!
Thanks @plap-disqus-f1c1592588411002af340cbaedd6fc33:disqus!! Yes Dave Ralicke is amazing!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, enjoyed the run through and nice to know what things you did. It may seem an obvious answer but can you tell me how you run all the signals to the SSL from the computer please? Also that makes me also like to know if you record through the ssl into comp or just straight in the box. Love what your doing mate and it’s very much apprieciated, Phil
HI @disqus_MTJwJjksK7:disqus, great question! I run the audio from my DAW separately out of my IO into the SSL. I hope that clarifies? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Could you describe the connection set up to me please? I have PC with really good sound card but just goes
out to my mixing desk as a stereo pair and not sure how an IO would work.
There are audio interfaces that have more than 2 outputs (some up to 16 or 32), these allow each output track to be routed to an external mixer for outboard processing.
For example: https://www.presonus.com/products/Quantum-Thunderbolt-2-Interfaces
Thanks Rob, thanks for your reply and with respect I realise what the audio interfaces do it’s just that I’m not sure how they hook up. I’ve seen vids of the 2 output types that just put signal through USB but with the 8, 16 or 32’s how would they connect, surely not USB is it? Do they come with some sort of software to map what goes in and out. It seems to be this sort of stuff is never explained fully so that’s what my initial question was all about. Thanks guys, over and out.
Sounds Great Warren!!! Really cool song!!!
Thank you! Love mixing tracks recorded by professionals…
Hi Warren! It’s refreshing to see someone not always snapping everything to grid. This is probably why so many mixes sound sterile. Unless something is way out I leave it alone. It is all about the feel isn’t it. I love what you are doing with vocal tracks. Very good stuff. I’m old school so this was right up my alley- ha!
Hi Warren,
Great song and performance, extremely informative video again! Can’t wait to mix this.
For the summing I only have two channels of TL Audio’s EQ and Compressor but will try to print all the main buses separately with them. Will try the same for the final mix as well as the Waves NLS plugin. Very exciting!!!
