Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone Shootout at Vintage King

Today I have something special for all of you artists, musicians, producers and engineers out there who are looking to add a new microphone to their arsenal: Something that can become your new go-to microphone and take your recordings to the next level.

When looking for a new microphone, you can spend countless hours or even days on blogs, review sites, reading articles and watching demo videos. The variety of microphones available is just as vast as the number of opinions on each of them.

How do you find the one microphone that really suits your needs and allows you to capture the high quality recordings that are looking for?

With this video, I want to help you to make an educated decision and find the perfect fit for you:

Vintage King was kind enough to let us use their showroom to test a wide variety of large diaphragm condenser microphones. In this shootout, we test over 20 microphones in the $500- $10000 price range. We discuss their frequency response and unique characteristics, but most importantly, we'll share insights into possible uses for each of these mics and discuss the most important points to consider when choosing a microphone.

I hope this video will help you to narrow down your choices and find a microphone that will be a great asset for you in any given recording situation.

  • Very interesting video, thank you. The Lauten Audio Series Black LA-320 was very interesting. What a great price. Interesting Slate VMS trick what a great value for the money.

Hi @plap-disqus-39461a19e9eddfb385ea76b26521ea48:disqus agreed, as I said to @plap-disqus-25ddc0f8c9d3e22e03d3076f98d83cb2:disqus those are two of the big takeaways I got from trying all of these mics out! For me on my voice the Wunder sounded amazing! For a general purpose do everything mic, the Bock and the Manley were amazing if you have a mid/high budget. In the lower budget the VMS is insanely good value! Of course if budget is not an issue you would get the Telefunken for it’s cache, it’s a great mic to have in your mic cabinet if you have the budget!! Here’s to an amazing 2017! Happy New Year!

  • Great video an very useful to hear all these like this.I feel I can understand better the differences that make some of these the prices hat they are. I would have liked to hear some of the more affordable mics as well like the Neumann TLM 102, 103, 107 & 193, the AGK C414 XLS and XL2 and even the Lewitt 650 and 940. I am on a quest to find a reasonable priced mic that doesn’t make “s” sounds fizz. Only one so far that sounds right to me is the Telefunken U47 but that is way beyond my price range.

Hi @plap-disqus-25ddc0f8c9d3e22e03d3076f98d83cb2:disqus thanks for your great comment! I will definitely do more videos like this in different price points! I really was blown away with the Bock, Manley and of course the Slate VMS and Lauten for value for money! Here’s to an amazing 2017! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren

      • I look forward to it Warren. FYI the mic that seems to be ticking the boxes for my vocals which suffer from a lot of sibilance is the Neumann TLM107. I need to find somewhere in the UK I can try one out.

        • Warren Huart

Hi @plap-disqus-25ddc0f8c9d3e22e03d3076f98d83cb2:disqus yes, I would suggest finding somewhere you can try a selection! When I worked on Jamie Hartman’s solo album (singer of Ben’s Brother and wrote of Rag N’ Bone Man’s hit ‘Human’) he insisted that he sounded great on a AKG 414, but of course I tried my U47 and U48, but he was right! The difference was huge! The lesson for me in this review is for my voice the Wunder makes my voice sound rich and full, so if it was just for recording myself I would buy that, however for multiple situations I feel the Slate VMS is the entry mic for me that would do everything and then of course the Manley and Bock both are incredible and the Telefunken gives you the cache! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

  • Rob Craig

Thanks for doing this Warren! I certainly would not have this type of access, to a comparison of such a great collection of mics, any other way.
    Happy New Year!

This is a really valuable shootout. Thank you Warren. Altough there is no Peluso P-12 comparison, I am considering buying one on a recommendation of a friend of mine. If anybody has an experience with this mic please convince me 🙂

  • Gordon

    Hi Warren.

Thank you for the video and all the information. Very educational.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017! 🙂

  • Jonas Piknias

Hey Warren, pretty nice thank you! I haven’t visited your site before.
But its a little bit sad that you speak so much about u47 microphones and you didnt had the Andreas Grosser Vox-O-Rama 47, which is for a lot of people the best u47 currently available.

  • Roar Hoogdorp
